The beginning of the annual Chinese calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, and so the specific day is different each year. In 2005, it falls on Feb. 9. The Chinese named each of the 12 years after an animal, based on a Buddha legend. This year is proclaimed the year of the rooster. The celebration may not be as widespread across North America as Jan. 1, but the Chinese consider it one of the more important days of the year.
