Melissa?s/World Variety Produce, the world-renowned specialty produce distributor based in Los Angeles, has a new employee in its ranks.

The employee is not unlike other recent college grads in that she has the youthful exuberance and drive that companies look for when taking a chance on new hires. But what sets this candidate apart is that she happens to be the namesake of the company which now employs her.

Melissa Hernandez " the "Melissa? for whom the company is named " officially joined Melissa?s/World Variety Produce at the start of 2005 after having graduated from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in December with a degree in hotel administration with an emphasis in entertainment and special events.

Initially, Ms. Hernandez will work with the company?s foodservice division as well as handle some marketing and public relations functions and be involved with some retail accounts. "Basically, I am here to get my hands dirty and learn what I can," she said. "While the business end of Melissa?s is very new to me, the product line is close to my heart."

Ms. Hernandez said that she is excited to join Melissa?s and has received encouragement and support from members of the company.

?I had a good idea that I would join [Melissa?s] some day, but I remained focused on school and wanted to keep my options open," she said. "It's really a perfect fit for me. I'm a foodie. I was born and raised around food."

Ms. Hernandez will work primarily from Las Vegas for the near future, but said that she will relocate to Los Angeles in about six months. "My parents [Sharon and Joe Hernandez] will be very happy to have me home," she said, "and I'm so excited that I will be working with my father every day. It's a dream come true."
